Characters: Mina, Amanda, Litchi
Relationship: Amanda is the owner of a juice bar. Litchi and Mina are her friends.

Amanda: Do you like to shop things on the Internet? I do. It’s so convenient to shop at home. You don’t have to go anywhere! All you need is a credit card. I have found good prices on many things. But usually I check several sites before I buy something. There are even sites that help you check prices on different sites. They help me save money and find the best bargains. I have bought many things online. I buy books, CDs, and DVDs most often. But I’ve also bought airline tickets, food and clothes.
Many people like to visit auction sites. I only bid on something once. But it was kind of fun. There is only one problem with Internet shopping. It’s too easy to spend too much money!

(Litchi is sitting at a table in the juice bar using her computer. Mina comes over.)
Mina: Hi! Litchi. What are you doing?
Litchi: I’m doing some of my Christmas shopping.
Mina: Good for you! I don’t like shopping. I always wait until the last minute.
Litchi: I like to go shopping. And I really like shopping on the Internet.
Mina: I do, too. It’s really convenient.
Litchi: And you don’t have to be with all the people at the mall.
Mina: Right! Especially at Christmas time!
Mina: Where is Amanda?
Litchi: She went to the post office to pick up a package. I’m watching the juice bar for her.
Mina: Another package? She got two yesterday.
Litchi: I know. And several more before the day after that. She must be just about done with her Christmas shopping!
Mina: She must be. But I wouldn’t want to see her credit card bill!
Litchi: I wouldn’t, either!
(Amanda comes in.)
Amanda: Thanks for watching the juice bar for me, Litchi!
Litchi: You’re welcome.
Mina: That’s a big package, Amanda.
Amanda: I know. I can’t wait to open it.
Mina: What did you buy?
Amanda: Something from the Internet.
Mina: You’ve bought a lot of things on the Internet lately.
Amanda: Uh-huh. I’ve gotten some really great things.
Mina: So what’s in the box?
Amanda: (opening the box) A new tent for my backyard.
Mina: Uh, Amanda, do you really need a tent for your backyard?
Amanda: Probably not. But the price was so good! This big tent was only $2250.
Litchi: What about shipping? How much was that?
Amanda: My order was over $3000, so shipping was free.
Litchi: So you bought something else?
Amanda: I did. A sleeping bag.
Mina: Are you planning to go camping?
Amanda: Maybe. You never know!
Litchi: You must spend a lot of time on the Internet.
Amanda: Lately I have. I’ve done some Christmas shopping. I bought my mother and sisters some nice jewelry.
Litchi: Good idea. They’ll probably like that.
Mina: Can you tell me which site you bought it from? Maybe I’ll buy some jewelry for my mom for Christmas.
Amanda: Sure. I’ll find it and give it to you later.
Mina: Thanks.
Litchi: Look what I got!
Mina: What?
Litchi: Three old comic books.
Amanda: Did you get those on an online auction site?
Litchi: Uh-huh. I only bid $20, too!
Amanda: That’s a bargain! I paid $50 for three that I bought.
Mina: You bought old comic books, too?
Amanda: Sure. I collect them.
Litchi: My boyfriend does, too. He’ll be so surprised! He read these when he was a child.
Mina: So, Amanda, what else have you bought online?
Amanda: Let’s see, I bought a trip to the ocean for my brother’s family. That’s their Christmas present.
Litchi: That’s a nice gift.
Amanda: I got the shirt I’m wearing. And these shoes, too.
Litchi: All on the Internet? Good for you. I wish my boyfriend would shop for clothes-anywhere. He hates shopping.
Mina: Most guys do.
Amanda: Not my husband!
(The doorbell is ringing.)
Litchi: Oh, I’ll answer the door!
Mina: Hi, Amanda. Here’s a letter for you.
Amanda: Thanks! (look at it) Uh-oh…
Litchi: Is something wrong?
Amanda: It’s my credit card bill. (opens it) Ouch! $44,000!!
Mina: Wow, what did you buy?
Amanda: Just about everything!

Questions:
1. Why did Amanda get free shipping?
2. Why did Mina want to know the site where Amanda bought the jewelry?
3. How much was Amanda’s credit card bill?
